On the occasion of Army Day, the Indian Army unveiled a Monumental National Flag of size 225 feet by 150 feet at Jaisalmer Military Station, said to be the world’s largest flag which weighs around 1400 kg. The Monumental National Flag, which is the world’s largest national flag made of Khadi fabric, is on display along the India – Pakistan Border in Jaisalmer, to be precisely at Longewala which was the center stage of the historic battle between India and Pakistan in 1971.
It took 49 days for 70 Khadi artisans to prepare this flag. Making of the Monumental National Flag has created nearly 3500 manhours of additional work for Khadi artisans and allied workers. A whopping 4500 meters of hand-spun, hand-woven Khadi cotton bunting has been used in making the flag which covers the total area of 33, 750 square feet. The Ashok Chakra in the flag measures a diameter of 30 feet.
The flag is made of 100% Khadi material and has been manufactured by Khadi Dyers and Printers. This flag is said to be a befitting tribute to the Indian heritage. The hoisting of the flag also commemorates the 75th year of India’s Independence being celebrated as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. This National Flag, which is clearly visible from a distance of several km, truly showcases the pride, aspirations and spirit of nationalism of our citizens.
The Monumental National Flag is the creation of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).
